Mechanics of Periodically Heterogeneous Structures

by:  L.I. Manevitch , I.V. Andrianov , V.G. Oshmyan

Book Description
April 27, 2010 3642074898 978-3642074899 Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2002
Rigorous presentation of Mathematical Homogenization Theory is the subject of numerous publications. This book, however, is intended to fill the gap in the analytical and numerical performance of the corresponding asymptotic analysis of the static and dynamic behaviors of heterogenous systems. Numerous concrete applications to composite media, heterogeneous plates and shells are considered. A lot of details, numerical results for cell problem solutions, calculations of high-order terms of asymptotic expansions, boundary layer analysis etc., are included.

Continuum Mechanics for Engineers, 2nd Edition

by: G. Thomas Mase , George E. Mase

Book Description
June 18, 1999 0849318556 978-0849318559 2
The second edition of this popular text continues to provide a solid, fundamental introduction to the mathematics, laws, and applications of continuum mechanics. With the addition of three new chapters and eight new sections to existing chapters, the authors now provide even better coverage of continuum mechanics basics and focus even more attention on its applications.

Beginning with the basic mathematical tools needed-including matrix methods and the algebra and calculus of Cartesian tensors-the authors develop the principles of stress, strain, and motion and derive the fundamental physical laws relating to continuity, energy, and momentum. With this basis established, they move to their expanded treatment of applications, including linear and nonlinear elasticity, fluids, and linear viscoelasticity

Mastering the contents of Continuum Mechanics: Second Edition provides the reader with the foundation necessary to be a skilled user of today's advanced design tools, such as sophisticated simulation programs that use nonlinear kinematics and a variety of constitutive relationships. With its ample illustrations and exercises, it offers the ideal self-study vehicle for practicing engineers and an excellent introductory text for advanced engineering students.

Editorial Reviews
Review
This volume offers something to engineers in all fields as an introduction to a wide variety of engineering topics. It's a good way to get into a field you might not know much about.

Material Inhomogeneities in Elasticity

by: G.A. Maugin

Book Description
July 1, 1993 0412495201 978-0412495205 1
Self contained, this book presents a thorough introduction to the complementary notions of physical forces and material (or configurational) forces. All the required elements of continuum mechanics, deformation theory and differential geometry are also covered. This book will be a great help to many, whilst revealing to others a rather new facet of continuum mechanics in general, and elasticity in particular. An organized exposition of continuum mechanics on the material manifold is given which allows for the consideration of material inhomogeneities in their most appropriate framework. In such a frame the nonlinear elasticity of anisotropic inhomogenous materials appears to be a true field theory. Extensions to the cases of electroelasticity and magnetelasticity are then straightforward. In addition, this original approach provides systematic computational means for the evaluation of characteristic parameters which are useful in various branches of applied mechanics and mathematical physics. This is the case for path-independent integrals and energy-release rates in brittle fracture, the influence of electromagnetic fields on fracture criteria (such as in ceramics), the notion of momentum of electromagnetic fields in matter in optics, and the perturbation of solitons propagating in elastic dispersive systems.

Nonlinear Waves in Elastic Crystals

by: Gerard Maugin

Book Description
0198534841 978-0198534846
The mathematical modelling of changing structures in materials is of increasing importance to industry where applications of the theory are found in subjects as diverse as aerospace and medicine. This book deals with aspects of the nonlinear dynamics of deformable ordered solids (known as elastic crystals) where the nonlinear effects combine or compete with each other. Physical and mathematical models are discused and computational aspects are also included. Different models are considered - on discrete as well as continuum scales - applying heat, electricity, or magnetism to the crystal structure and these are analysed using the equations of rational mechanics. Students are introduced to the important equations of nonlinear science that describe shock waves, solitons and chaos and also the non-exactly integrable systems or partial differential equations. A large number of problems and examples are included, many taken from recent research and involving both one-dimensional and two-dimensional problems as well as some coupled degress of freedom.

Editorial Reviews
Review

"This book presents various aspects of nonlinear propagation in elastic crystals. . . The book clearly shows the great expertise of its author in a broad range of different topics. This is clearly demonstrated by the following (nonexhaustive) list of topics considered: lattices, elasticity and anelasticity, electroelasticity, ferromagnets, elastic chains, crystals with microstructure, martensitic phase transitions, surface waves and thermoelasticity. the book largely reflects various aspects of research work by the author. . .This is a very original and interesting book which will mainly be useful to researchers in the filed of nonlinear waves in solids because it presents a very broad survey of different types of nonlinear dispersive wave occurring in crystals and of their modelization."--Mathematical Reviews

The Thermomechanics of Plasticity and Fracture

by:  Gerard A. Maugin

Book Description
June 26, 1992 Cambridge Texts in Applied Mathematics (Book 7)
This book concentrates on the mathematical theory of plasticity and fracture, and presents it in a thermomechanical framework. It follows the macroscopic, phenomenological approach, which proposes equations abstracted from generally accepted experimental facts, studies the adequacy of the consequences drawn from these equations to those facts, and then provides useful tools for designers and engineers. Many examples of plasticity and fracture are presented, and each chapter concludes with problems for students.

Editorial Reviews
Review
"One could characterize the style of the book as 'robust'. It has obvious pedagogical appeal. In the introduction the author expresses his hope that the book will find its place both on the student's shelf and in the professional scientist's office. The reviewer strongly recommends that."
